WHAT THEY'LL LOVE

This is what MIT found after they gave their teams the freedom to work remote:

WHAT THEY'LL HAVE

TROUBLE WITH

Buffer asked nearly 2,500 remote workers to tell them about the benefits and struggles that come with remote work. Above graph shows what they struggle with.

HERE'S WHAT YOU CAN

DO ABOUT IT

6 MUST-DO'S FOR EFFECTIVELY MANAGING REMOTE TEAMS

BUILD THE RIGHT

TECH STACK

You cannot succeed working remote without reliable tools. Here's a list of the most important tools that we are using:

Notion.so - all-in-one collaborative workspace

Google Drive - document storage and sharing

Slack.com - communication and messaging

Asana.com - manage team projects and tasks

Whereby.com - video meetings and conferences

Navigator.com - organise and run team meetings

Otter.ai - meeting transcription service

Dashlane.com - password manager

SPEND TIME COMMUNICATING

Make time to engage with every member of your team frequently, even daily if required. Talking business is just a part of it. Make sure to include the small talk you'd have on a normal day in the office.

More than half of human communication is non-verbal. Albert Merhabian says that only 7% of our understanding is based on spoken words. Look for non-verbal clues that feel strange. They'll allow you to detect and fix problems before they occur.

USE VIDEO

PLAN ONE-ON-ONES

Your open door policy does not work online. Use one-on-ones to make up for the informal contact that you have in the office. Schedule them weekly with everyone in your team. Never cancel! If you can't make the appointment, reschedule.

ADD PEOPLE ON CALLS

It's easy to ask people into a meeting at the office. Not so easy when your team is working from home. Make sure that everyone is looped in. Use the right tools to connect seamlessly and make sure they are installed on all machines.

MANAGE OUTCOMES,

NOT OUTPUT

Don't manage your remote team's activities, tasks or to-do's. You simply won't be able to keep up. Start introducing outcomes to provide direction and motivation. OKR and SMART goal methods connect outcome to output and allow you to evaluate progress.
